Community Feeds

On a monthly basis, as an open studio,  and/or in connection with every formal gallery exhibition, DMST hosts a Community Feed. Artists and their community work together to make a free home cooked meal that serves 60-100 people. The monthly Community Feed is an approachable invitation to the immediate community, including many folks without homes and living in supportive housing, artists, as well as friends & family of artists, to break bread, connect, share art and experience art together.

In the words of Audre Lorde -

“Difference must be not merely tolerated, but seen as a fund of necessary polarities between which our creativity can spark like a dialectic…Only within that interdependency of different strengths, acknowledged and equal, can the power to seek new ways of being in the world generate, as well as the courage and sustenance to act where there are no charters.”

James Birdsong - One of the first people to come up and introduce himself when we moved into this space. A true community guy. Always checking in on us. Coming to all of the feeds, even if it is just For a moment. He is not one to stay long. James has a habit of cracking a joke and then walking away immediately, as if he cannot wait to hear our reaction to what he just said. We once put on Its a Wonderful Life and Patricia and James danced to the whole song in the streets, it was one of the most touching moments, I was filming it and somehow my phone did not save it, I still wish I had that on video to share, but i know my memory of it will be forever.
