DMST Atelier Tenets: Community, Access, Joy, Sharing, Patience, Collaboration, Care

Foundational Text: Uses of the Erotic, Audre Lorde.

Located at 7th & Kohler in DTLA, just west of the Arts District, South of Skid Row and North & North East of the Produce, Fashion and Flower District, DMST Atelier, is a non-traditional gallery, studio, space for social practice.

Founded in April 2021, co-founders and fellow artists Marantz Moon & Frannie Hemmelgarn envisioned a flexible arts space that facilitated the growth of a connected and collaborative creative community.

For part of the year, the space at 1117 7th Street functions as a studio. Painting (oil and acrylic), sculpture, found materials (lots of cardboard and wood!) fill the room, the artists create works in connection to their individual practices.

For the rest  of the year, DMST operates as a non-traditional gallery space that hosts solo and group shows for emerging, established, outside, inside, anywhere on any spectrum, artists. More important than material, method or other identifiers, DMST looks to hold space for active makers and creators that share the DMST Atelier core tenets of Community, Access, Joy, Sharing, Patience, Collaboration and Care.

The Social Practice is a year round effort at DMST. On a monthly basis, as an open studio,  and/or in connection with every formal gallery exhibition, DMST hosts a Community Feed that serves 60-100 people. The DMST Social Practice also includes various interactive, participatory and collaborative art projects that take place on the streets of Los Angeles directly outside the Atelier doors. The activations are aimed at further removing barriers to entry for experiencing and participating in art making and joy.
